28 August 2024 saw an exciting visit for the Phase 2 and 3 girls of our #GirlsInBusiness program to the Amazon Skills Center, where they got to experience technology and innovation up close. This program aimed to motivate them to cultivate entrepreneurial abilities and comprehend how technology can be utilised for the benefit of society. The morning started with a friendly greeting by the Amazon team, followed by an engaging GET IT workshop that familiarised the girls with important technological ideas. They were given an introduction to design thinking and how it works.
During their visit, participants were challenged to identify a problem in their communities and develop an app to address it, aligning with our Innovation Bootcamp mission to identify problems and nurture social enterprises. Placed in their respective groups, the girls took on the challenge, of coming up with amazing apps. After being given enough time to create an app idea, they had to present it in front of everyone by giving their app name, what problem they would be tackling, and how the app would work. This exercise broadened their ideas and gave them the skills needed to create an app for their own business ideas.
While on the visit, the girls were divided into two groups so they could take part in a workshop and a scavenger hunt organised by the Amazon team. The scavenger hunt brought an enjoyable and competitive aspect to the day, promoting collaboration and critical thinking. It had them moving around the skills centre looking for clues and interacting with the interactive exhibits.
The visit ended with an award ceremony, which honoured the participants' hard work and inspired the girls to create positive change in their communities. Looking forward we are bridging a gap between connecting the girls' personal lives and their business endeavours, impact , and their communities, navigating the digital landscape, preparation to bring their business ideas to life.
